This sampler is a mix of Maori and pakeha elements. The letters stitched in red are used in Te Reo Maori (the Maori language). The letter g is only used as ng (as in singer), the sound f is written as wh by most iwi (tribes). The houses are whare, the traditional meeting house, and a place where whanau (family) come together. These blocks were inspired by beautiful tukutuku weaving in the Bethlehem Catholic churches, and each tells its own story. Some of the single tiles are taken from the tuku panel designs. The waka or canoe. The idea for this design comes from the legend of ghost waka seen on Lake Tarawera, before the mountain erupted in 1886. The glorious pink and white terraces were destroyed and many lives lost. Designed Moana Bianchin see our gallery or go to our order page

This design is inspired by a traditional type of weaving on large panels called tukutuku panels. AN13 Steps : The steps represent the journey of the spirit, and the diamond motif shows that within the complexity of our journey, the same paths are walked by many. AN14 Sea to Sky : This panel is about the cycle of life. Our mountains rise up from the sea piercing the clouds, touching the sky. Far below the rain falls on the earth and the sea, beginning the cycle once more. AN15 Earth: This panel is about working the earth with respect and care. The cross stitched blocks represent the earth and its gift of life. The backstitched panels represent the people and their crops.
